The community was named for the Powers family, which originally owned much of the land east of the city. Family members, including a former state senator, still live in the region although the Powers’ original dairy farm was sold. The area, which was home to a majority of U.S. Air Force personnel from Peterson A.F. Base, now has an eclectic group of residents – from young professionals to farmers.
During the past five years, Powers has been the fastest growing area in Colorado Springs. Many commercial and retail businesses have moved into the community – bringing with them a more diverse selection of products, services, and dining options. This recent growth of Powers has also contributed to an increase in the quality of healthcare facilities. The new St. Francis Medical Center, a state-of-the-art tertiary medical facility, is currently under construction in Powers and scheduled to open in the summer of 2008.
Properties in this community are typically in planned residential neighborhoods. Single family homes are located on smaller lots than properties in other rural communities such as Falcon and Peyton. These neighborhoods often provide residents with a number of amenities in addition to other attractions found in the area. Powers also has two public golf courses. Cherokee Ridge and Springs Ranch golf courses are both public, 18-hole courses that offer a challenging round for golfers at every skill level.
