Surrounded by rolling hills, these communities have seen a surge in population and commercial development over the past five years. Powers, located just north of Peterson Air Force Base, has been the fastest growing area in Colorado Springs. Falcon has also experienced a growth in retail business and population with many shopping centers, restaurants and planned communities cropping up in the area. Some communities in the East, such as Peyton, are more rural than neighboring towns.
Peterson Air Force Base provides a military presence, and personnel once made up a large portion of the residents. Since then, the area has diversified to include life-long residents and new arrivals who recently relocated to the area.
East Colorado Springs hosts a number of community events and activities including the Colorado Springs Flea Market and Colorado Balloon Classic. This annual event over Labor Day weekend draws hot-air ballooners from all over the country. The Chico Basin Ranch, situated on 87,000 acres, can give you hands-on experience at working on a cattle ranch. For beginners and avid golfers alike, two city-owned golf courses are located in the area. Patty Jewett Golf Course, an 18-hole championship course, is the third oldest golf course west of the Mississippi. Valley Hi Golf Course is an 18-hole, 72-par course that offers players scenic views of Cheyenne Mountain and Pikes Peak.
